Passive RFID tags do not have a battery. They draw power from a reader and convert the signal into energy. Passive tags due to its form factor can be used on boxes, equipment, materials etc. Read range 1-10 meters. 

 

Active RFID  tags are powered using an internal battery. They have a much longer read range than passive tags due to having an internal battery. Active tags can be found on larger sized shipping containers, vehicles, miners.
