Fruit Harvesting – OnRamp Solution

QEW Orchards, the largest apricot producer in the Southern Hemisphere, employ up to 150 casual fruit pickers at a time during the harvest.

Pickers are paid based on their output (number of filled crates) in order to provide incentive to generate maximum output.

Once picked crates are filled the original process involved a supervisor walking down each row in the orchard to count the number of filled crates, adding this to a tally sheet that was manually totaled and entered into a spreadsheet.  This system was time consuming and inefficient and Qew Orchards wanted a solution to automate the process.

The OnRamp Access Solution implemented works as follows;

Assigning cards to pickers

• All pickers are assigned credit card size PVC ISO cards with a UHF Gen 2 inlay in order to track the number of crates filled
• OnRamp Access makes use of a CS778 near field antenna (with the CS461 UHF Gen 2 4 Port reader) to assign lots of 100 tags per picker in a matter of seconds
• An ID card for each picker (number 1 – 150) is used to identify the picker to which the crate tags will be assigned.
• The OnRamp Access database tracks the UIDs of the cards assigned to each picker.
  

Reading cards in crates

• Filled crates are stacked on pallets and brought back to the weigh station by forklift.
• A portal (4m wide x 2m high) is set up at the weigh station processing area, with 4  far field antennas connected to the same CS461 reader, which is connected to a PC via Ethernet.
• Once the infrared sensors are triggered in the portal, the readers starts to read all the RFID Cards on the filled crates.
• OnRamp Access shows the number of cards read and the user clicks on the confirm button to finalise the count.
  

Database

• All information collected is written to an SQL Express database.
• Qew admin staff can generate a report showing the number of cards issued to each picker and how many crates were returned with each picker’s cards via the OnRamp Navigator interface.
• This report can be printed or exported to their payroll system.
