Australia’s 2nd largest telecommunications company, Optus, needed a solution to track small equipment at the Belrose Satellite Facility in Sydney.
A range of equipment including IT assets, such as hard drives and rank mountable switches and hubs, were stored in a warehouse adjacent to the communications floor. Staff removed items as and when they needed them but no system was in place to determine the location of these items once they left the warehouse or the identity of those who had removed the items. As a result they had to hold greater inventory of these items, often at a great cost, resulting in inefficient use of assets and capital.
Ramp implemented our OnRamp Asset Tracker solution in order to automatically track the movement of tagged items as well as the identity of the item handler.
As most of the equipment contained metal, the Omni-ID Mini tag was selected. The Omni-ID tags are UHF Gen 2 tags optimized to perform on metal objects, with a read range of approximately 2m. Tag ID’s were encoded to the IC as well as printed on a barcode on the tag exterior.
Employees were provided with a personnel tag, containing the AD820 UHF Gen 2 inlay by Avery Denison.
A 4 antenna portal was constructed on the main entry door between the warehouse and the communications floor. The CSL 461 reader was used, with 4 circularly polarized CS771 antennas. Infra red sensors were used to determined direction of travel as well as to constrain the read event.
OnRamp Freeway middleware was installed on a laptop, connected to the reader over a dedicated WLAN. A standalone solution, incorporating the OnRamp database and OnRamp Navigator web interface, was used to manage the item and employee database. Alerts were sent to the read-zone (via the I/O port as an audible alarm and a red light) in the event of a reserved item being removed as well as the lack of a personnel tag to accompany an asset (or the presence of more than 1 personnel card).
The reader also generated a single beep each time an item was successfully taken through the read-zone without any issues.
A USB barcode reader was used to add tag ID’s to the database for new items.
The system was successfully deployed in June 2008 and Optus have indicated that they are happy with the solution.
